Police still investigating barn fire, suicide in Rockingham

ROCKINGHAM — Police are investigating a death that occurred after fire broke out at a home in Rockingham on August 21.

Police were notified of a fire on Parker Hill Road and received reports that a man, possibly connected to the fire, was armed inside a home adjacent to the barn.

Authorities responded and secured the scene, and say they located the man deceased in a bedroom from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head during a search of the home.

The man was identified as Jeffrey Burkert, 58, a resident of the home.

The incident is under investigation by detectives with the Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations.

The barn fire is under investigation by the State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit.

Police say a preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire is suspicious.
