Driver charged following wrong-way crash that injured 5 in Dummerston

DUMMERSTON — A 65-year-old man from Massachusetts was arrested after driving the wrong way on I-91 and hitting a police car, and several other motorists.

Police were notified that a pickup truck was headed south in the northbound lane of I-91 at around 5:40 p.m.

A responding trooper encountered the wrong-way driver and swerved to avoid a collision, but was sideswiped by the truck.

Police say a short distance later the pick-up truck collided head-on with a northbound van, causing the van to strike a third vehicle.

Two other vehicles went off the road while taking evasive action to avoid collisions.

According to the report, the van was occupied by four individuals.

Three of them were taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment of unknown injuries and the fourth suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

The driver of the second pick-up truck suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Brattleboro Memorial.

The drivers of the two other vehicles were evaluated on the scene and released.

Bernard McDonald, of Westborough, Massachusetts was arrested on charges related to this incident.

McDonald was due to be arraigned at 12:30 p.m. today in court.
