SHAFTSBURY — A 22-year-old man from Arkansas was arrested on multiple charges following a police chase in Shaftsbury yesterday.

Police say they attempted to stop a vehicle on US Route 7 for driving in a negligent manner during hazardous road conditions at around 11:51 p.m.

The driver, later identified as Curtis A. Steele, of North Little Rock, AR, sent police on a short pursuit but was eventually taken into custody after stopping in the middle of US Route 7 in Sunderland.

Police say that Steele was driving under the influence of drugs.

He performed sobriety tests and was also evaluated by a drug recognition expert.

At the conclusion of processing, he was lodged within the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility for lack of $1,000 cash or surety bond.

He is facing charges which include driving under the influence of drugs, gross negligent operation, and attempting to elude a police officer.

He is scheduled to appear in court on January 21 to answer to the charges.
